India Nepal Border Dispute

Nepal has decided to introduce a new currency note featuring Indian territories of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani.

  • Treaty of Sagauli – Signed in 1816 (after Anglo-Nepalese War) between British India and the Kingdom of Nepal demarcating River Kali as the boundary between India and Nepal.
  • Nepal’s stand – Nepal alleges that the river originates either from Limpiyadhura or from Lipulekh and considers both the locations as part of Nepal’s Sudurpaschim province.
  • India’s stand – India states that Kalapani is in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand where the river originates from.

  • Joins Ghagra river in Uttar Pradesh, which is a tributary of Ganga.
  • River Projects – Tanakpur hydro-electric project, Chameliya hydro-electric project, Sharda Barrage.
