Context:
Government introduces SHRESHTA (Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas) scheme for residential education for SC students.
- Till now in FY 2023-24 the expenditure under SHRESHTA Scheme is ₹14.94 cr.
About SHRESHTA Scheme:
- Primary objective – To expand the reach of government development initiatives and address service deficiencies in SC-dominant areas within the education sector
- Aim –
- To promote cooperation between residential high schools that provide high-quality education and grant-in-aid institutions run by non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- To provide an environment for socioeconomic upliftment of SCs
- Ministry – Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment
- Type – Central Sector Scheme
- Benefits – High quality free residential education to poor and meritorious scheduled caste (SC) students from class 9th to class 12th.
- Eligibility –
- Applicable only for the admission in Class 9 and Class 11.
- Students from the SC community who come from a marginalized income group with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh.
- Selection of students – National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA (NETS) conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA)
- Implementing agency –
- Mode 1: District Administration
- Mode 2: Voluntary organisation (VO)/ Non-Government Organisation (NGO)/ Other organisation
