Mission Indradhanush 5.0

Context:

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare concluded all 3 rounds of Intensified Mission Indradhanush 5.0 (IMI 5.0) Campaign.

  • All States/UTs except Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Punjab concluded all 3 rounds.

About the IMI 5.0 campaign:

  • Aim – To enhance immunization coverage for all vaccines provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) as per the National Immunization Schedule (NIS).
  • It ensures that routine immunization services reach the missed-out and dropped-out children and pregnant women across the country.
  • It is being conducted across all the districts in the country and includes children up to 5 years of age (Previous campaigns included children up to 2 years).
  • Special focus is on improvement of Measles and Rubella vaccination coverage to eliminate them by 2023.
  • It leverages the U-WIN digital platform for Routine Immunization in a pilot mode.

About Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP):

  • Launch: 1978 as expanded Immunisation Program
  • Renamed as UIP in 1985 when reached beyond urban areas
  • Provides free of cost against 12 vaccine preventable diseases –
    • Nationally against 9 diseases – Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Rubella, severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and Meningitis & Pneumonia caused by Hemophilus Influenza type B
    • Sub-nationally against 3 diseases – Rotavirus diarrhoea, Pneumococcal Pneumonia and Japanese Encephalitis
  • Major milestones – Elimination of polio in 2014

Mission Indradhanush:

  • Launch: 2014
  • Purpose – To expand full immunization coverage in India.
  • Ministry: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)
  • Aim – To immunise all children under the age of 2 years, as well as all pregnant women, against seven vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Objective – To rapidly increase the full immunization coverage to 90%.
  • One of the flagship schemes under Gram Swaraj Abhiyan and Extended Gram Swaraj Abhiyan.
  • Intensified mission indradhanush (IMI 4.0):  conducted in 416 districts, including 75 districts identified for Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav across 33 States/UTs.

A total of 5.06 crore children and 1.25 crore pregnant women have been cumulatively vaccinated till date under Mission Indradhanush.
