3D Printed Brain Tissue

3D Printed Brain Tissue

A team of University of Wisconsin–Madison scientists developed the 1st 3D-printed brain tissue that can grow and function like typical brain tissue.

  • Brain cells derived from pluripotent stem cells are placed in a thin layer of bio-ink gel.
  • The cells fused to form tissue and due to its delicate nature, the nerves within the tissue began to extend and establish communication.
  • The thinness of the tissue facilitated the easy influx of nutrients and oxygen into the cells.
  • Communication among the nerves occurs through neurotransmitters, forming a network.

Pluripotent stem cells are a particularly potent type of stem cell that normally only exists during early embryonic development.

A neurotransmitter is a signaling molecule that a neuron secretes to affect another cell. The target cell can be a neuron, gland, or muscle cell.

  • Benefits includes –
    • Enables detailed study of brain functions and brain disorders.
    • Helps in creating treatments for neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
    • Allows scientists to replicate specific brain regions, offering tailored research and treatment options.
  • Traditional 3D printing builds objects by layering material on top of itself. In contrast, new method places brain cells in a bio-ink gel, allowing them to fuse into tissue naturally.
  • This allowed the layers to be thinner in new method and thus the cells within the brain were exposed to as much oxygen and nutrients as possible.
