A draft policy has been created by Union Environment Ministry to declare region around Pong dam as eco-sensitive zone

  • Highest earth filled dam in India
  • Manmade reservoir
  • On banks of Beas River
  • Also called Maharana Pratap Sagar
  • Declared as
    • Wildlife Sanctuary by Himachal Pradesh government
    • A Ramsar site
  • Location: Around Pong dam lake
  • Largest man-made wetland
  • Made for largest population of migratory birds and endemic species
  • Origin – Himalayas (near Rohtang Pass – southern end of Pir Panjal Range)
  • Major Tributaries – Bain, Banganga, Luni, Uhal, Banner, Chakki, Gaj, Harla, Mamuni, Parvati.
  • River Basin: Indus River System
