Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) initiative is recognized as the United Nation World Restoration Flagship
Terai Arc Landscape:
- A Trans-boundary biodiversity hotspot
- Stretches between – River Yamuna in the west and the river Bhagmati in the east, comprising the Shivalik hills, the adjoining bhabhar areas and the Terai flood plains.
- Spread across – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and the low lying hills of Nepal.
- Protected Areas–
- Corbett Tiger Reserve
- Rajaji National Park
- Dudhwa Tiger Reserve
- Valmiki Tiger Reserve
- Nepal’s Bardia Wildlife Sanctuary
- Chitwan National Park
- Sukhla Phanta Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Home to 3 flagship species – The Bengal tiger, one horned rhino and the Asian elephant
Terai Arc Landscape initiative:
- Aim – To ensure habitat integrity and connectivity across the landscape
World Restoration Flagship:
- Established in 2022
- Under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
- Led by – UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and other partner organisation.
- Objective – Reviving ecosystems on the brink of degradation, hold promise for environmental conservation and socio-economic development.
- Criteria of selection – On the basis of Geographic and probability of success criteria.
- Progress is monitored through the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring.
