Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 announced

  • Aim – To reward the cleanest cities in the country.
  • Launched in 2016 and awarded annually.
  • A part of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban
  • Ministry: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • Criteria: Door-to-Door collection of waste, Segregation at source, Cleanliness of public areas, Clean water bodies and Citizens’ feedback
  • Other indicators – ‘Open Urination’ (Yellow Spots) and ‘Open Spitting’ (Red Spots)
  • Leading cities: Indore followed by Surat
  • Leading States: Maharashtra followed by Madhya Pradesh
  • Bottom States: Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Nagaland and Tripura
  • Other Achievements:
    • Varanasi named the cleanest Ganga town
    • Chandigarh won the award for city having best safety standards for sanitation workers
