State of the World’s Migratory Species 2024 report was launched.

  • Launched by – Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) of Wild Animals
  • Significance – It provides the 1st comprehensive global assessment on the conservation status and threats facing migratory animals.
  • Nearly half of species listed in the Convention are showing population declines
  • More than one-in-five are threatened with extinction
  • 97% of CMS-listed fish are threatened
  • Overexploitation and habitat loss are the top threats facing migratory species
  • Convention on Migratory Species – An environmental treaty of the United Nations that provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial, aquatic and avian migratory animals and their habitats.
  • Signed on – 23 June 1979
  • Also known as – Bonn Convention
  • Significance Only global and UN-based intergovernmental organisation established exclusively for the conservation and management of migratory species
  • Decision making organ – Conference of Parties (COP)
  • 2 Appendices –
    • Appendix I – Lists endangered migratory species.
    • Appendix II – Lists species that have an ‘unfavourable conservation status’
  • Position of India – India has been a party to the CMS since 1983.
