Recently, forest officials said that over 1.50 lakh migratory birds visited sanctuaries, wetlands in Andhra Pradesh.

  • State – Andhra Pradesh
  • Situated on the Kolleru Lake
  • Established with the aim of safeguarding the diverse birdlife that thrives in the wetlands surrounding the lake
  • Spans over – Wet land marsh habitat extending across – West Godavari and Krishna
  • Falls under – Kaikalur forest range
  • Declared as a sanctuary in 1999 by Andhra Pradesh government
  • Significance –  Home to a vast repertoire of birds and known for sheltering Pelicans

Bird’s repertoire – A collection of different versions of the species song. In many species, males have their own repertoires

  • State – Andhra Pradesh (96%) and Tamil Nadu (3%)
  • Location – Coromondal Region (Border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu)
  • 2nd largest brackish water lake in India, after Chilika Lake
  • Rivers – Arani, Kalangi and Swarnamukhi
  • Significance –
    • The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal
    • Home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre
  • Protected sites – Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary
  •  Buckingham Canal – A navigation channel situated on its western side
