Global Carbon Project (GCP) Report

Global Carbon Project (GCP) Report

Emissions from oil have risen most during last one year showing overall global carbon emission reached all time high.

  • Global emissions from oil rise steeply in 2023 compared to 2022 pushing back coal and gas
  • Reason – Canada’s destructive wildfire season – 6 to 8 times than average
  • more than 40% global emissions required to be cut by 2030 as per  Paris agreement targets.
  • The Climate Action Tracker says – warming of 1.8°C still well above 1.5˚C.
  • Part of Future Earth in 2014
  • Prepared every year
  • By a global consortium of scientists
  • Establish a common understanding of the Earth carbon cycle
  • To tackle the problem of rising concentrations of greenhouse gases.
  • Dominant greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxides.
  • Independent scientific project
  • Tracks government climate action and measures  according to Paris Agreement.
  • Collaboration of Climate Analytics and New Climate Institute,
  • Quantifies and evaluates climate change mitigation targets, policies and action.
  • Calculates global warming consequence and emissions gaps

Previous Year Question

Consider the following;
1. Carbon monoxide
2. Nitrogen oxide
3. Ozone
4. Sulphur dioxide
Excess of which of the above in the environment is/are cause(s) of acid rain?

[UPSC Civil Services Exam – 2022 Prelims]

(a) 1, 2 and 3 only
(b) 2 and 4 only
(c)  4 only
(d) 1, 3 and 4 only

Answer: (b)
Explanation
Acid Rain refers to rain or any other form of precipitation that has a higher level of hydrogen ions .Oxides of sulphur and nitrogen which are acidic in nature are responsible for acid Rain. Thus carbon dioxide and ozone does not create acid rain.

Practice Question
