Cabinet approves inclusion of additional activities in National Livestock Mission

  • Additional coverage – Eligible entrepreneur will get capital subsidy and state government will be assisted for breed conservation of horse, donkeys, mule, camel.
  • Enhancing Fodder supply –
    • Enhancing seed processing Infrastructure.
    • State government will be assisted for fodder cultivation in non-arable land
  • Simplification of Livestock Insurance programme
    • Premium for the farmers has been reduced to 15% – Remaining premium will be shared by the Centre and the State.
    • Number of animals to be insured has also been increased to 10 cattle unit instead of 5 cattle unit for cattle sheep and goat.
  • Ministry – Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying
  • Type – Both Centrally Sponsored and Central sector
  • Key objectives –
    • Entrepreneurship development in small ruminant, poultry and piggery sector & Fodder sector.
    • Increase of per-animal productivity through breed improvement.

    • Breed improvement of Livestock and Poultry
    • Feed & Fodder
    • Innovation and Extension Jurisdiction
  • Conducted by Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying

  • Latest Census – Held in 2019 (20th Livestock Census)
  • Findings –
    • Total livestock population increased over Livestock Census-2012.
    • The total number of cattle in the country has shown an increase due to a sharp increase in cross-bred cattle and higher female indigenous cattle population.
    • Population of the total exotic/crossbred cattle has increased
    • Decline of indigenous cattle population
  • Total Bovine population (Cattle, Buffalo, Mithun and Yak) has shown an increase
