Context:

Leptospirosis, a potentially fatal zoonotic bacterial disease has emerged as an important infectious disease in the world today.

About Leptospirosis:

  • Common Name: Rat fever(Rats are not the sole cause of the disease)
  • Causal Agent: Bacterium leptospira (Leptospirainterrogans)
  • Carriers: Wild or domestic animals (rodents, cattle, pigs, and dogs)
  • Transmission: Shedding of leptospira, usually in the urine of infected animals.
  • Threats –
    • Ambient air in humid climate help pathogens survive longer.
    • Extreme weather events like floods and hurricanes
    • Poor waste management and unhygienic sanitation facilities
    • A high density of stray animals
  • Prevention –
    • ‘One Health’ approach
    • Using personal protective equipment like gloves and boots
    • Using antiseptic liquids
