Context:
Nepal has decided to introduce a new currency note featuring Indian territories of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani.
Origin of dispute:
- Treaty of Sagauli – Signed in 1816 (after Anglo-Nepalese War) between British India and the Kingdom of Nepal demarcating River Kali as the boundary between India and Nepal.
- Nepal’s stand – Nepal alleges that the river originates either from Limpiyadhura or from Lipulekh and considers both the locations as part of Nepal’s Sudurpaschim province.
- India’s stand – India states that Kalapani is in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand where the river originates from.
Kalapani Region:
- A valley that is administered by India as a part of the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.
- Situated on – Kailash Mansarovar route.
Susta Region (Bihar):
- Another important area of dispute between India and Nepal
- Change of course of Gandak river is the main reason for dispute in the area.
- Located on the banks of – Gandak river.
- The river is called Narayani river in Nepal.
- It joins Ganga near Patna, Bihar.
Kali River:
- Also known as – Sharda river or Kali Ganga
- Joins Ghagra river in Uttar Pradesh, which is a tributary of Ganga.
- River Projects – Tanakpur hydro-electric project, Chameliya hydro-electric project, Sharda Barrage.
