E-sports at the Asian Games

Context:

E-sports has been included at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, as a medal event. E-sports and Breaking (Breakdance) are scheduled to make their inaugural appearances.

About E-sports:

  • It is a competitive sport where gamers use their physical and mental abilities to compete in certain genres of video games in a virtual, electronic environment.
  • 7 competing events include – Arena of Valor Asian Games Version, Dota 2, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, FIFA Online 4, League of Legends, PUBG Mobile Asian Games Version and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.

About Asian Games:

  • It is a multi-disciplinary sports event held once in every 4 years.
  • organized by – Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)
  • Recognised by – International Olympic Committee
  • 2nd largest multi-sport event after Olympics.
  • India – One of the founder member of Asian Games Federation and Host of the first Asian Games in 1951
  • Mascots –
    • Chenchen, Congcong, Lianlaian (a group of robots in 19th Asian Games)
    • 1st mascot – Appu (Indian elephant)

Breaking is a style of street dancing that incorporates coordination, acrobatic and intricate body movements, style, and aesthetics. It evolved from the hip hop movement during the early 1970s and is the most widely known of all hip hop dance styles.
