International Organisation for Migration (IOM) launched Project Promoting Regular Assisted Migration for Youth and Skilled Professionals.

  • Launched by – International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
  • Objective – To facilitating safe, orderly, and regular migration for aspiring Indian migrant workers and students in collaboration with MEA, NITI Aayog, and State Governments.
  • It will promote dissemination of communication materials on safe and orderly migration pathways.

India has a large diaspora with over 32 million spread across the globe (as per 2021 Dec). Also, India is the world’s largest recipient of remittances.

  • Established – 1951
  • Previously known as – Provisional Intergovernmental Committee for the Movement of Migrants from Europe (PICMME)
  • Intergovernmental organization within United Nations in the field of migration.
  • Mandate – Promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.
  • Member states – 175 (including India)
  • Major Report – World Migration Report
  • World’s 1st inter-governmental agreement covering all dimensions of international migration.
  • Finalised under United Nations in 2018.
  • Aim – To boost cooperation to manage migration and numerous actions ranging from technical issues like the portability of earnings by migrant workers to reducing the detention of migrants.
  • It is non-legally binding.
