CDRI announces funding for 12 projects across 17 Small Island Developing States (SIDS)

  • Global partnership of national governments, UN agencies, multilateral development banks and financing mechanisms, the private sector, and academic and research institutions.
  • Aim – To promote the resilience of new and existing infrastructure systems.
  • Launched in – 2019 at UN Climate Action Summit by India.
  • Significance – Government of India’s 2nd major global initiative after the International Solar Alliance
  • Members – 39 countries and 7 organizations
    • 7 organisations include – Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank Group, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), European Union, European Investment Bank and Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies
  • Key Initiatives – Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS), Global Infrastructure Resilience Report etc.
  • Governance – India is the permanent co-chair of the CDRI Governing Council and Executive Committee.
  • Secretariat – New Delhi
  • Group of developing countries that face unique social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities due to their small size and isolation.
  • Recognized as a special case at the 1992 Rio Summit (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development).
  • Regions –
    • Caribbean – Includes countries like Jamaica, Barbados, and Bahamas.
    • Pacific – Includes countries like Fiji, Samoa, and Vanuatu.
    • AIMS (Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea) – Includes countries like Maldives, Mauritius, and Seychelles
  • International Support and Initiatives –
    • United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS)
    • SAMOA Pathway – A framework adopted in 2014 to address the sustainable development of SIDS.
    • Climate Financing – Access to international funds like the Green Climate Fund to support climate resilience projects.
