At a recently held Arab League Summit, UN chief appealed for the Gaza ceasefire and regional unit

  • Intergovernmental pan-Arab organisation of Arab states in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Also called – League of Arab States
  • Headquarters – Cairo, Egypt.
  • Formed on – 22nd March 1945, following the adoption of the Alexandria Protocol in 1944
  • Objective – To strengthen and coordinate the political, cultural, economic, and social programs of its members and to mediate disputes among them
  • Members – 22 Arab countries
    • Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
  • India has observer status.
  • Functioning – Makes decisions on a majority basis, but there is no mechanism to compel members to comply with resolutions.
    • Each member has one vote on the Council, decisions being binding only on those states that have voted for them.
