Mankidia tribes of Odisha received habitat rights over forests in Odisha under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.

  • Ethnic Group – Belongs to Austro-Asiatic community, a semi-nomadic section of the Birhor tribe.
  • Primarily found in – Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal.
  • Living – Depend on forests for livelihood; known for their food gathering and hunting practices.
  • Live in temporary makeshift settlements called tandas, with dome-shaped leaf huts known as Kumbhas.
  • Language – Speak a form of Munda language; some uses Odia.
  • Beliefs – Supreme deities include local gods called Logobir and Budhimai.
    • Practice ancestor worship for health and success in hunting and gathering.
  • Recognition – Identified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in Odisha.
