Context:
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently released details of Anemia Mukt Bharat.
Anemia Mukt Bharat:
- Aim – To reduce anemia in vulnerable sections of society, including women and children.
- Mission – To achieve target under POSHAN Abhiyaan
- Uses 6X6X6 strategy – 6 target beneficiaries, 6 interventions and 6 institutional mechanisms.
- Interventions –
- Prophylactic Iron and Folic Acid supplementation.
- Ensuring delayed cord clamping after delivery in health facilities.
- Addresses non-nutritional causes of anaemia with a special focus on malaria, haemoglobinopathies, fluorosis.
- Biannual mass deworming for age group 1-19 years
Anemia:
- A condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen-carrying capacity is insufficient to meet physiologic needs
- Causes – Iron deficiency (most common cause), Vitamin B12 and Vitamin A deficiencies, chronic inflammation, parasitic infections, and inherited disorders
- Pregnant women and children are particularly vulnerable.
- Impacts – May result in fatigue, weakness, dizziness and drowsiness.
