Rivalry between the Malas and Madigas has come to the fore yet again after political parties announced candidates for the general elections.

  • Madiga community – Sub-castes among the Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Telangana
  • Also present in – Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
  • Population – Madiga community in the undivided Andhra Pradesh and Telangana constituted more than 48% of the SC population (2011 Census)
  • Sub-castes within Madiga – Bindla, Chindu, Dakkali and Mashti.
  • Madiga Dasari – Priestly class of Madigas
  • Occupation – Primarily associated with tanning leather, making footwear and craftswork
  • Known for their expertise in crafting the traditional drum called the Dappu
  • Mala – Telugu caste from the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
  • Also present in – Karnataka and Maharashtra.
