Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report, 2024 released.
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Report:
- Launched in – 2010
- Jointly published by – UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
- A measure of poverty that considers multiple deprivations in education, health, and living standard
- A person is considered ‘MPI poor’ if deprived of 1/3rd or more of the weighted indicators.
Key Findings of 2024 Index:
- Countries at war experience higher deprivations across all indicators of multidimensional poverty compared to non-conflict settings.
- 1.1 billion people (~18%) across 112 countries live in acute multidimensional poverty.
- India has the largest number of people in extreme poverty, with 234 million affected.
India’s National MPI (NMPI):
- Introduced in 2021 by NITI Aayog.
- Retains the 10 original indicators of the global MPI and adds 2 more indicators that are Maternal Health and Bank Account.
