National Supercomputing Mission

Context:

9 more supercomputers will be addedin addition with 18 supercomputers being deployed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NCM).

About National Supercomputing Mission:

  • Launched in 2015.
  • Objectives –
    • To provide the country with supercomputing infrastructure
    • To meet the increasing computational demands of academia, researchers, MSMEs, and startups.
    • To make India a world leader in High-Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Steered jointly by –Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY)
  • Implemented by –Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
  • Indian Supercomputers –
    • 1st Supercomputer – PARAM 8000
    • 1stindigenous supercomputer – PARAM Shivay
    • Other Supercomputers in India – PARAM Shakti, PARAM Brahma, PARAM Yukti, PARAM Sanganak.
  • Networking of supercomputers on the National Supercomputing grid over the National Knowledge Network (NKN).

A supercomputer is a computer that operates at or near the highest computational capacity, with PETAFLOP being a measure of its processing speed, denoting a thousand trillion floating point operations per second.
