ICMR is working to develop the first-ever vaccine for shigella.

  • There is no approved vaccine against shigella yet
  • ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (NIRBI) has developed a vaccine that has passed animal trials.
  • Caused by bacteria that causes shigellosis.
  • 2nd leading cause of diarrhoea worldwide (after Rotavirus) and the 3rd  leading cause of death in children under five.
  • Modes of Transmission: Shigella spreads through contaminated food or water, or person-to-person contact.
  • Incubation Period: is usually 1–4 days.
