Context:
Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the Central Sector Scheme “National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES)”.
About National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES):
- Aim: Enhance forensic infrastructure across the country.
- Duration: From 2024-25 to 2028-29.
- Components
- Establishment of National Forensic Sciences University(NFSU) Campuses across the country
- Establishment of Central Forensic Science Laboratories: To increase the forensic analysis capacity.
- Enhancement of Existing Infrastructure: Enhancing facilities at the Delhi Campus of NFSU.
- Key Objectives
- Strengthen capacity and capabilities of NFSU to meet the demand for trained forensic professionals.
- Supporting New Criminal Laws
- New laws mandate forensic investigation for serious offences (punishment of 7 years or more).
- Anticipated increase in forensic laboratory workload.
- Improving Criminal Justice Process with advanced technology.
- Target: Support government’s objective of a conviction rate over 90%.
National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU):
- Location – Gujarat (Gandhinagar)
- Ministry – Ministry of Home Affairs.
- It is the only university globally dedicated exclusively to forensic sciences.
- Originally founded in 2009 as Gujarat Forensic Sciences University.
- Renamed to National Forensic Sciences University in 2020.
- To provide specialized training to professionals in forensic science.
- Recognized as an institution of national importance
