About Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA):

  • Appointed by Central Government as per Section 17 of the IT Act.
  • Established in 2000.
  • Objective –To facilitate the growth of E-Commerce and E-Governance by promoting the widespread adoption of digital signatures.
  • License and regulate the working of Certifying Authorities.

About Root Certifying Authority of India (RCAI):

  • Established by CCA under Section 18(b) of the IT Act.
  • Purpose –To digitally sign the public keys of Certifying Authorities (CAs).
  • Uses Smart Trust software.
  • Holds the highest level of certification in India.

About Security Sockets Layer (SSL):

  • Security protocol that ensures the confidentiality of sensitive data.
  • First developed by –Netscape in 1995.
  • SSL Certificates – Small data files that link a domain’s IP address to an organization’s information.
  • Commonly used to secure credit card transactions, data transfers, logins, etc.

About National Informatics Centre (NIC):

  • Established in 1976.
  • Ministry –Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • Objective –To provide technology-driven solutions to Central and State Governments.
  • Headed by – Director General.
