Context:

As per Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), nearly 12 countries in Africa would receive 18 million doses of malaria vaccine (Mosquirix) over the next two years.

About GAVI:

  • An international organization as a global vaccine alliance created in 2000.
  • Aim – To save lives and protect people’s health by increasing equitable and sustainable use of vaccines.
  • Core Partners – WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • GAVI Board –
    • Responsible for strategic direction and policy-making
    • Oversees the operations of the Vaccine Alliance
    • Monitors programme implementation

About Malaria Vaccine (RTS,S/AS01):

  • Trade name: Mosquirix
  • World’s 1st Malaria Vaccine.
  • First and only vaccine to show partial protection in young children.
  • It is an injectable vaccine targeting P. falciparum.
  • It is made up of proteins found on the surface of the Plasmodium falciparum parasites (PFP).
  • Protects against infection of the liver with the Hepatitis B virus.

Malaria:

  • Mosquito borne blood disease
  • Caused by – 6 Plasmodium parasites
  • Regions – Tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, South America, Asia.
  • Spread through – Infected female Anopheles mosquitoes
