Norovirus

A surge in the outbreak of Norovirus has been detected in parts of the United States.

  • A highly contagious virus that causes gastrointestinal illness.
  • Also known as – “winter vomiting bug” or “stomach flu”.
  • Transmission
    • Spread through contaminated food, water, and surfaces.
    • Highly contagious and can survive on surfaces for extended periods.
  • Treatment:
    • No specific treatment available.
    • The disease is self-limiting and usually lasts 2 or 3 days.
    • Sufficient rest and hydration are crucial.
  • Vulnerability – Affects people across all age groups.
    • Serious symptoms are more common in children, the elderly, and people with comorbidities.
  • Resistance – Resistant to many disinfectants and can withstand heat up to 60°C.
    • Steaming food or chlorinating water does not necessarily kill the virus.
  • Seasonal outbreaks usually occur in colder months
