Defence Corridors:
- A route or a path along which domestic productions of defence equipment by public sector, private sector and MSMEs are lined up to enhance the operational capability of the defence forces.
- Significance –
- Helps the country to be self-reliant in the field of defense production
- Promoting ‘Make in India’ reducing our imports
- Promote the export of these items to other countries
Industrial corridors:
- Infrastructure investments in a specific area to encourage industrial development
- Benefits –
- Helps with economic development by providing infrastructure and logistics facilities
- Attract investment, create jobs, and improve living standards
Defence Industrial Corridor:
- A dedicated region or area strategically planned to promote indigenous production of defence and aerospace-related items.
- India have 2 corridors –
- Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UP DIC)
- Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC)
Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UP DIC):
- Nodal agency – Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA)
- To execute this project in conjunction with various other state agencies
- Planned across 6 nodes – Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra, Aligarh, Chitrakoot
Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC):
- Only state to have all its districts covered under industrial corridor projects
- Nodal Agency – Tamilnadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO)
- Coordinates industrial and infrastructural development activities in these corridors with different agencies of Government
- Comprises of 5 pivotal nodes – Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem, and Tiruchirappalli
- Strategic advantages –
- Airports – 4 international airports (Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai) and 2 domestic airports (Tuticorin, Salem)
- Surplus power supply
- Chennai’s connectivity – Chennai is connected globally by three submarine cables
