Cellulitis

Telangana has witnessed a surge in the number of cellulitis cases recently.

  • Common and potentially serious bacterial skin infection.
  • Caused by Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria.
  • In some cases, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can also cause cellulitis.
  • Affects deeper layers of the skin, including the dermis and subcutaneous tissue.
  • Commonly occurs on the lower legs but can affect any body part.
  • Affected skin appears swollen, inflamed, painful, and warm to the touch.
  • Potential Complications:
    • If left untreated, the infection can spread to lymph nodes and the bloodstream, becoming life-threatening.
    • Not typically contagious between people.
  • Treatment:
    • Antibiotics are the primary treatment.
    • Full recovery is typical within 24 hours of antibiotic treatment.
