Context:
India launches BharatGen, World’s First Government-funded Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM)
BharatGen:
- Launched by – Ministry of Science & Technology.
- Objective – To develop generative AI systems capable of producing high-quality text, speech, and multimodal content in various Indian languages.
- Implementation Agency – IIT Bombay, under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS).
- Key Features –
- India-centric Data – Focuses on collecting and curating data specific to India, reducing reliance on foreign models.
- Multilingual and Multimodal – Supports diverse Indian languages, dialects, and cultural contexts.
- Open-source Platform – Accessible to all, promoting industrial, commercial, cultural, and inclusive technological development.
MLLM and Generative AI:
- MLLM – Large Language Models (LLM) trained on extensive datasets, including text and non-textual data (images, audio, video).
- These models use machine learning to understand and interpret human languages and other complex data.
- Generative AI – Utilizes algorithms and deep-learning models to create new content, such as audio, code, images, and text.
