City Gas Distribution Network

Prime Minister laid the foundation of City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar, West Bengal

  • A system of underground pipelines designed to supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) through various connections and stations.
  • Usage –
    • CNG: Used as an auto-fuel.
    • PNG: Utilized in domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors.
  • Composition: Natural gas is a fossil fuel, primarily composed of methane (CH₄), and is odorless.
  • Regulatory Body: Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).
  • Role of PNGRB: Grants authorization for CGD network development in specific geographical areas (GA).
  • Legislation: Established under the PNGRB Act, 2006 to safeguard interests in petroleum, petroleum products, and natural gas industries.
  • Urja Ganga Project: Expansion of pipeline infrastructure to connect eastern states.
  • Additional Initiatives:
    • Priority allocation of domestic natural gas to the CGD sector.
    • Granting Public Utility Status to CGD projects to enhance development.
    • Special guidelines for PNG usage in Defense and Public Sector Undertakings’ residential areas.
