Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon entered into a ceasefire agreement that draws on the provisions of Resolution 1701
- Passed by the UN Security Council (UNSC) in 2006.
- UN Security Council resolution ended the Israel-Hezbollah war of 2006.
- Stipulates that the only armed groups in the area south of Lebanon’s Litani River should be the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces (UN Interim Force in Lebanon – UNIFIL).
E-Daakhil Portal
Department of Consumer Affairs announces nationwide implementation of the E-Daakhil portal.
- An online platform that simplifies the consumer grievance process, allowing consumers to file complaints and track cases
- 1st launched by the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC) in 2020.
- NCDRC – Quasi-judicial commission set up under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986.
UNAIDS
UNAIDS World AIDS Day Report 2024 launched.
- Joint UN programme of 11 UN Organizations on HIV/ AIDS (UNAIDS).
- The 11 organizations include UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and World Bank.
- Vision – Zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths.
- According to the recent report, last year, 630000 people died of AIDS-related illnesses, and 1.3 million people around the world newly acquired HIV.
Immunotherapy
A study from Northwestern University in Chicago discovered that white blood cells activated by severe COVID-19 demonstrate cancer-fighting abilities.
- A type of cancer treatment that uses the body’s immune system to detect and attack cancer cells.
- Types – Immune checkpoint inhibitors, adoptive cell-based therapies (like CAR T-cell therapy), and cancer vaccines.
- Mechanism – Works by either stimulating the immune system to work harder or smarter to attack cancer cells or by providing the immune system with components, such as man-made immune system proteins.
- While immunotherapy can be very effective, it may not work for everyone and can cause side effects like inflammation and autoimmune reactions
