UPSC Prelims Facts

Liberhan Commission was in news following the Ram Temple consecration ceremony at Ayodhya

  • Set up in – 1992
  • Objective – To probe the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya
  • Headed by – Justice M. S. Liberhan
  • Significance – With48 extensions, it became the longest Commission of Inquiry in the history of Independent India.
  • Finding – Recommended a law providing for exemplary punishment for misusing religion to acquire political power

Two persons from Kutia Kondh Tribe attended Republic Day parade in New Delhi as special guests.

  • State – Odisha
  • Status – Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)
  • Society and culture –
    • Families are mostly nuclear and patriarchal in character.
    • Worshippers of nature.
    • Known for their buffalo sacrifice ritual, called “Kedu” to worship their Earth Goddess”.
    • Practice Shifting cultivation, or Slash-and-Burn agriculture which they call as dongar chaas or podu chaas.

New notification on Aadhaar released.

  • Notification released by EPFO – Removed Aadhar from list of acceptable documents for proof of Date of Birth (DoB).
  • AadharProof of identity but not of citizenship or DoB.

Military exercise Steadfast Defender 2024 started.

  • Launched by – North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
  • Significance – NATO’s largest military exercise since the Cold War
  • Formation of NATO – In 1949 by Washington Treaty.
  • Headquarter – Brussels, Belgium
  • Members – 31 (Recently, Finland joined in 2023).

Was in news following Republic Day celebrations.

  • On January 26 – Flag is folded or rolled-up, and attached to the top of a pole.
    • It is then unveiled (‘unfurled’) by the President, who does so without pulling it up.
  • On August 15 – Flag, positioned at the bottom of the pole
    • It is raised (‘hoisted’) by Prime Minister, from the bottom to the top.
  • National Flag was adopted on 22 July 1947.
  • Ratio of length to the height (width) – 3:2.
