Registrar General of India (RGI):
- Established in 1949 under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

- Conducts the decennial Census to collect demographic, socio-economic, and geographic data.
- Oversees the implementation of the Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969.
- Manages the Sample Registration System (SRS) to estimate fertility and mortality rates.
- Conducts the Linguistic Survey of India (LSI) to document the linguistic diversity of the country.
- Supports the creation of National Population Register (NPR), in pursuance to provisions contained in Citizenship Rules, 2003 framed under the Citizenship Act, 1955

- The Registrar General is typically a civil servant of Joint Secretary rank.
