Central Pay Commission

Union government approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission.

  • Neither a Constitutional nor Statutory body
  • Constituted by the Central government
  • Mandate –
    • Reviews and recommends changes to the salary structure of the employees.
    • Also reviews the bonuses, allowances and other benefits of the employees.
  • Usually constituted every 10 years
  • 1st pay commission was set up in 1946.
  • Since Independence, a total of 7 pay commissions have been formed.
  • 7th pay commission was implemented in 2016 and is set to complete its term in 2026.
  • Not mandatory for the government to accept the recommendations of the pay commission.
  • Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance is responsible for the implementation of the recommendations of the Commission.
