Context:
The Centre has announced Padma Awards 2025 on Republic day.
Padma Awards:
- One of the Highest civilian honours of India
- Announced annually on the eve of Republic Day
- Interrupted years – 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997
- Awardees are presented a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion.
- Categories of awards – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri
- Awardees are decided by Padma Awards Committee recommendations
- Maximum per year – 120 awards
- This does not include Padma awards presented to foreigners and also those awarded posthumously.
- Nomination – open to public including self-nomination.
- Exceptions –
- Government servants including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible
- Generally, not conferred posthumously (after once death) but in highly deserving cases, the Government can decide.
- Can be conferred on a person only where a period of at least 5 years has elapsed since conferment of the earlier Padma award.
- In terms of Article 18 (1) of the Constitution, the award cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to the recipient’s name.
