Panchayat Development Index (PDI)

Context:

Kerala has begun the process to measure Panchayat Development Index (PDI) of local bodies to assess the progress of individual panchayats in achieving the Localised Sustainable Development Goals.

About Panchayat Development Index (PDI):

  • It is a multi-domain and multi-sectoral index that is intended to assess the overall holistic development, performance, and progress of panchayats.
  • It provides a holistic and evidence-based assessment of the development status of panchayats, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ministry – Ministry of Panchayati Raj
  • 6 Key Indicators – Infrastructure, Health and Education, Economic Indicators, Social Indicators, Governance and Administration, Environmental Sustainability
  • Grading System – A+ (above 90%), A, B, C, D (below 40%)
  • Present Status of PDI –
    • Implemented as a pilot project in 4 districts of Maharashtra (Pune, Sangli, Satara, and Solapur)
    • The data collected was used to compile the report of the Panchayat Development Index Committee.
