E-Courts Mission Mode Project

Context:

Union Cabinet approved the e-Courts Project Phase III as a Central Sector Scheme spanning four years (2023 onwards) with financial outlay of ₹7210 crores.

About E-Courts Mission Mode Project:

  • A national e-Governance project for Information and Communications Technology enablement of district & subordinate courts.
  • Type – Central Sector Scheme
  • Implementation – Under the joint partnership of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, and e-Committee, Supreme Court of India in a decentralized manner through the respective High Courts.
  • Aim – To promote ease of justice by making the system more accessible, affordable, reliable, predictable, and transparent for all stakeholders.
  • Major Components – Cloud Infrastructure, Paperless Court, Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), Integration with Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), S3WAAS platform etc.

National Judicial Data Grid:

  • A database of orders, judgments and case details of 18,735 District and subordinate Courts and High Courts created as an online platform under the eCourts Project.
  • Key feature – Data is updated in real-time and has granular data up to the Taluka level.
  • Developed by – National Informatics Centre (NIC)
  • Importance –Works as a monitoring tool to identify, manage & reduce pendency of cases.
  • Recognition –In the Ease of Doing Business report for 2018, the World Bank (WB) commended NJDG for its role in generating case management reports that facilitate contract enforcement.
