10 years of Telangana State

  • After independence, Andhra Pradesh became the 1st state to be formed based on language
  • Formed in – 1953, following the death of PottiSriramulu
  • Perceived regional inequality in the development led to the demand of a separate Telangana state
  • Formation – Telangana was carved out of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad as its capital in 2014
  • June 2 is observed as Telangana Formation Day
  • Currently, there are 28 states and 8 Union territories in the country
  • Article 3 has provisions for the formation of new States and the alteration of areas, boundaries or names of existing States.
  • According to the article, Parliament may by law form a new State.
  • Such a Bill shall be introduced in either House of Parliament
  • Prior recommendation of the President is needed.
  • Before recommending a Bill, which affects the area, boundaries or name of any of the States, the President shall refer this Bill to the State Legislature to express its view within a specified time.
  • Parliament is not obligated to accept or act on the views of the State Legislature
  • Parliament can create a new state through ordinary legislation (i.e. with a simple majority).
