Udagai – A Chera town

Context:

The war in which Cholas ravaged a Chera town in Kanniyakumari – The Hindu Article.

Historical Background of the war:

  • Fought between – Cholas and Cheras
  • Location – Udagai (present Udayagiri), Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu
    • Udagai – A big town, surrounded by huge walls with tall towers and there were palatial (palace-like)houses.
  • During the reign of Raja Raja I.
  • Battle began with the conquest of Kanthalur Salai in the Chera Kingdom.
  • Kanthalur Salai Kalamartharuliya Sree Raja Raja Devan – A Chola period inscription
  • Discovery of a Chola period epigraphy near Chengam proves “Salai” was an army training centre run by the Cheras.
  • Tamil book Cholar Varalaru says the phrase ‘Kandalursalai kalamaruttaruliya’, found in many inscriptions, referred to the destruction of the naval fleet (kalam means ship, while arutta means destroy in this context) of the Cheras in Kandalur in the west coast.
  • Reason – Messenger of Raja Raja I was detained by the Chera king at Udagai.
  • Aftermath –
    • Raja Raja I renamed the village Muttam as Mummudi Chola Nalloor.
    • He returned with tonnes of gold and a lot of elephants and cattle.
  • Literary evidences – Moovar Ula, Kalingathu Parani, Udagai Kozhuvi (meaning the town was burnt) – a copper plate inscription.
