Paruveta Utsavam

Recently, The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) made efforts to secure UNESCO recognition as an ‘intangible cultural heritage’ for the annual ‘Paruveta’ festival.

  • An annual mock hunting festival
  • State – Andhra Pradesh
  • Tribes – Chenchu tribes
  • Significance
    • Chenchu tribe considers Ahobila Narashima as their brother-in-law and the tradition is inviting him home on Makar Sankranti

Unlike other Paruveta, Ahobilam utsav is the only tradition in Andhra Pradesh conducted for a ‘mandala’ (40 days).

  • Language –Own language called Chenchu
  • Cultural practices –
    • Divided into several exogamous kinship groups – Kulam’ or ‘Intiperu’
    • Practice early marriage and prefer cross-cousin marriage

  • Founded in – 1984
  • Headquarters – New Delhi
  • Aim – To spearhead heritage awareness & conservation in India
  • Mission – To conserve heritage is based on the belief that living in harmony with heritage enhances the quality of life, and it is the duty of every citizen of India as laid down in the Constitution of India.
  • Recognized as one of the world’s largest heritage organizations, with over 190 Chapters across the Country
    • Chapter – A forum that is formed with the authority and directions of INTACH with about 25 members
  • It has chapters in 215 Indian cities, as well as chapters in Belgium and the United Kingdom
