Context:
The historic Kakori train action, a significant event in Indian freedom will be celebrated throughout Uttar Pradesh.
Kakori Train Action:
- A train robbery event that took place at Kakori, Lucknow on 9 August 1925.
- Organised by – Indian revolutionaries of Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
- Leaders – Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan.
- Other members – Rajendra Lahiri, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Sachindra Bakshi and Banwari Lal.
- Event – On 9 August 1925, the Number 8 Down Train travelling from Shahjahanpur to Lucknow, carrying treasury bags meant to be deposited in the British treasury in Lucknow, was looted by the revolutionaries.
- Aftermath – British authorities launched violent crackdown and arrested several members of the HRA.
- Rajendranath Lahiri, Ashfaqullah Khan, Ram Prasad Bismil and Thakur Roshan Singh were hanged in 1927.
- The only major leader of HRA at this time who evaded arrest was Chandrashekhar Azad.
Hindustan Republican Association:
- Formation – In 1924, after Gandhi’s decision to withdraw Non-Cooperation Movement
- Founders – Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Sachindra Nath Bakshi and Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee.
- Other members – Chandra Shekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh
- Manifesto – Titled Krantikari (Revolutionary)
- Mission – To establish a federal Republic of the United States of India through an organized, armed revolution.
- It envisioned a republic grounded in universal suffrage and socialist principles.
- Evolution – HRA transformed into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in 1928, after the execution of Kakori Conspiracy accused.
