Gifts at G20 – Cheriyal scroll painting | Tussar silk | Bell metal figurine

Context:

Three gift items, representing the rich traditional art culture of the country presented to the spouses of the G20 leaders.

Cheriyal scroll painting (A Tribal Art):

  • State – Telangana
  • A popular and modified version of Nakashi art, highly rich in local motifs.
  • Special Features –
    • Painted in narrative format
    • Depict stories from Puranas and Epics.
    • Used in story-telling by the nomadic balladeer community called Kaki Padagollu.
    • Painted in mostly primary colors (dominantly red color)
  • Granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2007.

Nakashi Art (Scroll Paintings) in Different Regions:

  • Pabuji ki Pad & Devenarayana katha of Rajasthan
  • Dasavathara of Goa
  • Pinguli & Chitra Katha of Maharashtra
  • Prasasti Patra of Maharashtra and Gujarat
  • Patachitra traditions in Odisha and Bengal

Tussar silk:

  • One of the finest varieties of Silk
  • Silk is obtained from the Saja, Sal, and Arjun trees of forests in Chhatisgarh, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Kosa Silk – Sanskrit name of Desi Tussar
  • Highly valued for its natural gold colour inherited from Tasar Silk Moth (Green silkworms).
  • Categories – Katia, Ghhichha etc.

Silk production in India:

  • India is the 2nd largest producer of silk next to China.
  • It contributes about 32% of global silk production.
  • Produces all 4 types of silk – Mulberry silk (91.7%); Tasar silk; Eri silk; and Muga silk
  • Types of Silks – Eri Silk (peace silk), Spider Silk, Muga Silk (Assam), Sea Silk (Mussel silk), Coan Silk etc.

The handcrafted bell metal figurine has been prepared by artisans from Chattisgarh using ancient lost-wax technique. The technique is similar to the process used for creation of Harappan civilisation’s famous dancing girl artefact.
