Context:
Ministry of Tribal Affairs is showcasing a wide range of traditional tribal art, artifacts, paintings, pottery, textiles, organic natural products and many more at the ‘Tribes India’ pavilion.
Pithora paintings:
- Done by – Rathwa, Bhil, Nayak and Tadi tribes of Gujarat, parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
- It traditionally performed on walls inside homes.
- Motifs used in paintings include Lion, Elephant, Bhil women, palm tree etc.
- They are characterized by 7 horses representing the 7 hills that surround the area where the Rathwas reside.
- They are more of a ritual (to thank God or for a wish or a boon) than an art form.
Angora and Pashmina shawls:
- Belongs to Leh-Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh
- Woven by – Bodh and Bhutia tribes.
It also includes:
- Metal Ambabari craft – Belongs to Meena tribe of Rajasthan.
- Gond painting of Madhya Pradesh
- Saura painting from Odisha
- Eri or Millenium Silk made by Bodo tribe from Assam
- Natural products such as Araku Valley coffee, honey, cashews, rice, spices etc.
