Tribal Art and Artifacts for G20 Summit

Context:

Ministry of Tribal Affairs is showcasing a wide range of traditional tribal art, artifacts, paintings, pottery, textiles, organic natural products and many more at the ‘Tribes India’ pavilion.

Pithora paintings:

  • Done by – Rathwa, Bhil, Nayak and Tadi tribes of Gujarat, parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
  • It traditionally performed on walls inside homes.
  • Motifs used in paintings include Lion, Elephant, Bhil women, palm tree etc.
  • They are characterized by 7 horses representing the 7 hills that surround the area where the Rathwas reside.
  • They are more of a ritual (to thank God or for a wish or a boon) than an art form.

Angora and Pashmina shawls:

  • Belongs to Leh-Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh
  • Woven by – Bodh and Bhutia tribes.

It also includes:

  • Metal Ambabari craft – Belongs to Meena tribe of Rajasthan.
  • Gond painting of Madhya Pradesh
  • Saura painting from Odisha
  • Eri or Millenium Silk made by Bodo tribe from Assam
  • Natural products such as Araku Valley coffee, honey, cashews, rice, spices etc.
