Context:
Sandstone replicas of Konark wheels from the Konark Temple have been installed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Cultural Centre and Amrit Udyan.
Konark Temple wheel:
- Built during 13th century under the reign of King Narasimhadeva-I.
- Has 24 spokes that symbolises time (Kalachakra) as well as progress and continuous change.
Konark Sun Temple:
- Location – Odisha
- Built in 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of Eastern Ganga dynasty
- Also called Black Pagoda
- Designed in the shape of a colossal chariot that comprises of –
- 24 wheels representing 24 hours in a day.
- 7 horses that symbolize the 7 days of the week.
- Architecture – Kalinga architecture
- Declared as UNESCO world heritage site in 1984.
