Context:
Supreme Court has ordered the government of Punjab to complete the construction of the SYL project.
About Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal:
- Under-construction 214 km long canal
- Aims to connect the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers.
- Water sharing between the states of Punjab and Haryana.
- Aims to provide 3.45 MAF out of 3.5 MAF of Haryana’s average annual share of surplus Ravi-Beas waters (as per 1981 agreement).
- However, the proposal met obstacles and was referred to the Supreme Court of India.
About Satluj River:
- Origin – Rakshas tal near Mansarovar Lake
- Known as Langqen Zagbo inside Tibet/China.
- It is an antecedent river.
- Passes through the Shipki La and enters the Punjab plains.
- Project – Bhakra Nangal project, Luhri Stage-I Hydro Electric Project
- Right bank tributaries – Spiti, Ropa, Taiti, Kashang, Mulgaon, Yula, Wanger, Throng, Rupi
- Left bank tributariesn – Tirung, Gayathing, Baspa, Duling, Soldang
