Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal

Context:

Supreme Court has ordered the government of Punjab to complete the construction of the SYL project.

About Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal:

  • Under-construction 214 km long canal
  • Aims to connect the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers.
  • Water sharing between the states of Punjab and Haryana.
  • Aims to provide 3.45 MAF out of 3.5 MAF of Haryana’s average annual share of surplus Ravi-Beas waters (as per 1981 agreement).
  • However, the proposal met obstacles and was referred to the Supreme Court of India. 

About Satluj River:

  • Origin – Rakshas tal near Mansarovar Lake
  • Known as Langqen Zagbo inside Tibet/China.
  • It is an antecedent river.
  • Passes through the Shipki La and enters the Punjab plains.
  • Project – Bhakra Nangal project, Luhri Stage-I Hydro Electric Project
  • Right bank tributaries – Spiti, Ropa, Taiti, Kashang, Mulgaon, Yula, Wanger, Throng, Rupi
  • Left bank tributariesn – Tirung, Gayathing, Baspa, Duling, Soldang

An antecedent stream is a stream that maintains its original course and pattern despite the changes in underlying rock topography.
