River Gomti | River Ganga

Indian Army has raised an additional company for revitalisation of the Gomti river, following the success of first Composite Ecological Task force (CETF) created for rejuvenation of Ganga.

  • Origin – Starts at Gomath Taal (also called Fulnar Jheel) in UP.
  • Drains the area between river Ramganga and Sharda
  • Tributary of – River Ganga
  • Tributaries – Kathina, Sai, Chowka, etc.
  • Major Cities – Lucknow, Jaunpur, etc.
  • Origin – Originates as Bhagirathi from Gangotri Glacier.
    • Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet at Dev Prayag, from where it is known as Ganga.
  • Destination – The river flows southeast through the plains of northern India, eventually emptying into the Bay of Bengal near Sagar Island.
  • Basin States – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
  • Major Cities on its Banks – Haridwar, Kanpur, Allahabad (Prayagraj), Varanasi, Patna, and Kolkata.
  • Left Bank Tributaries – Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, and Mahananda.
  • Right Bank Tributaries – Yamuna, Son, Chambal, Betwa, and Ken.
  • Hydroprojects – Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi, the Farakka Barrage in West Bengal, and the Rihand Dam on the Rihand River.
