Laughing Gull

 First time in the country, laughing gull from North America spotted at Chittari estuary in Kasaragod.

  • A migratory bird
  • Native – North America
  • Known for unique laughter-like calls
  • Characteristics –
    • Medium-sized gull with black head, black legs, long drooping bill white body, and long wings.
    • Takes about 2-3 years to reach adult plumage
    • Nest in colonies on beaches, islands, and marshes
    • Known for their adaptability and opportunistic feeding habits.
    • Feeds on a variety of prey, including fish, insects, and scavenged food.
  • IUCN: Least Concern
  • Coastal area where river meets sea forming brackish water.
  • Location – Kerala
  • Other birds in the estuary –  Lesser black-backed gull, Slender-billed gull, Brown-headed gull, Great crested, Lesser crested tern, Caspian tern.
