First time in the country, laughing gull from North America spotted at Chittari estuary in Kasaragod.
Laughing Gull:
- A migratory bird
- Native – North America
- Known for unique laughter-like calls
- Characteristics –
- Medium-sized gull with black head, black legs, long drooping bill white body, and long wings.
- Takes about 2-3 years to reach adult plumage
- Nest in colonies on beaches, islands, and marshes
- Known for their adaptability and opportunistic feeding habits.
- Feeds on a variety of prey, including fish, insects, and scavenged food.
- IUCN: Least Concern
Chittari Estuary:
- Coastal area where river meets sea forming brackish water.
- Location – Kerala
- Other birds in the estuary – Lesser black-backed gull, Slender-billed gull, Brown-headed gull, Great crested, Lesser crested tern, Caspian tern.
