River Godavari

A century old Indian Iris tree, on the bank of River Akhanda Godavari, collapsed recently.

  • Largest Peninsular river system.
  • Also known as – Dakshin Ganga.
  • Origin – Rises from Trimbakeshwar in the Western Ghats in the Maharashtra region
  • Bounded by – Satmala Hills (North), Ajanta Range and Mahadeo Hills (South), Eastern Ghats (East) and Western Ghats (West).
  • Drainage into – Bay of Bengal.
  • Known as Akhanda Godavari at Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh) before splitting into distributaries.
  • It empties via its 2 mouths – Gautami Godavari to the north and the Vasishta Godavari to the south.
  • River basin extends over – Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka, Puducherry.
  • Tributaries –
    • Right Bank – Pravara, Manjira and Maner
    • Left Bank – Purna, Pranhita, Indravathi and Sabari
  • Hydropower projects – Nizam Sagar, Pochampad, Polavaram etc.
