Context:

Kuki-Zo tribes moved against review of ST (Scheduled Tribes) status of certain communities

Kuki-Zo tribes:

  • Hill tribes
  • Ethic group – found in tri-border
  • Tri border India ( Northeastern states), Myanmar and Bangladesh (Chittagong Hill)
  • Tribe status – based on the dialects spoken and their origin
  • Lives in a cluster of closely built houses
  • Men – wear colourful  sangkhol (jacket) and a pheichawm (dhoti)
  • Women –heavily ornamented with necklaces, bangles etc.
  • Zo – term denotes all the speakers of Kuki-Chin languages
  • Brought by the British in 19th century – served as mercenaries (soldier)
  • Used as a buffer to protect the valley from regular raids by Naga Tribes
